I’ve always believed that if you can make something yourself, you should…within reason, of course! That philosophy definitely carries over into my kitchen, especially when it comes to seasoning blends. This homemade Poultry Seasoning Blend only takes a minute to make using spices you probably already own, tastes fresher, and saves a little money compared to buying a premixed bottle. Now I always keep a small batch on hand for soups, stuffing, and Sunday dinners, and it feels great not to buy another bottle.

All recipes are rigorously tested in our Nashville Test Kitchen to ensure they are easy, affordable, and delicious.
Homemade Poultry Seasoning
Store-bought poultry seasoning can definitely work in a pinch, but making it at home gives me more control over the flavor. I like using thyme, basil, oregano, paprika, rosemary, onion powder, and garlic powder for a cozy mix that works in everything from casseroles to roast chicken or turkey. There’s no salt or pepper added, which I love because it lets you season your dish exactly how you like it. It smells amazing as soon as the spices hit the bowl, and it tastes fresher than anything I have ever brought home from the grocery store!
Recipe Success Tips
- My homemade poultry seasoning mix doesn’t include salt or pepper, so make sure to add them to your taste! This allows you to fully control the seasoning in whatever dish you’re making.
- If you want a finer seasoning mix, you can process it in a mortar and pestle, coffee grinder, or small food processor. Doing this will make your homemade mix as smooth and uniform as the store-bought versions.
- A lot of poultry seasonings can lean into more fall flavors (think roast turkey!) and add nutmeg and sage. I decided to keep it evergreen with this recipe, and use more commonly found herbs and spices, but feel free to add them for the holidays! Other herbs and spices you can add include marjoram, dried parsley, ground ginger, white pepper, black pepper, and smoked paprika.
- This poultry seasoning can also be utilized on other meats (not just poultry!), in stuffings, soups, stews, sauces, and to season croutons, vegetables, or potatoes! I’ve shared some of my favorite ways to use it after the step-by-step photos below.
- This recipe easily doubles or triples if you want to make a large amount. As written, this blend makes a heaping 1/4 cup.
