More About Jennie

Jennie Alley was born in East Tennessee and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, where her love of food started early. Every science fair project she created revolved around food, and her curiosity for cooking was encouraged at home.  Her father traveled the world working in the mining industry, while her mother, a Home Economics teacher, instilled in Jennie a love for the kitchen and the creativity that comes with it.  She grew up with an older sister, who remains one of her closest friends, and a much younger brother nearly eighteen years her junior. Though different in many ways, her siblings helped shape her sense of family and connection. Her sister later joined her in Nashville, where Jennie has loved watching her nieces grow up.

Jennie’s creativity first found its outlet in the arts. She played piano and violin, sang in choir, and spent much of her time immersed in her school’s award-winning theater department, even performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival at just fifteen. That early foundation in music and performance taught her the value of discipline, collaboration, and finding joy in the process, qualities that continue to guide her in the kitchen today.

Her passion for creativity led Jennie to Middle Tennessee State University, where she earned a degree in Mass Communications with a focus on Music Business. During college, her love for cooking began to take root. Working in restaurants gave her a deep appreciation for hospitality and teamwork, and discovering Budget Bytes during that time connected her to the joy of simple, affordable home cooking.  After college, Jennie worked in advertising and continued acting, eventually signing with an agent in Nashville. But her heart kept leading her back to food. After years working in and managing restaurants and bars across the city, she decided to fully pursue her passion and returned to school to study Culinary Arts at Nashville State Community College.

Following culinary school, Jennie apprenticed at Mr. Aaron’s Goods, an award-winning pasta shop, where she led wholesale pasta production, assisted with bagel production, and made sauces, meatballs, and other house favorites. As a lifelong pasta lover, it was a dream come true. She later joined the team at Little Hats Italian Market, where she deepened her understanding of teamwork in a professional kitchen and refined her technical and creative skills. These experiences strengthened her belief that food is both an act of creativity and a way to connect with others.

Jennie’s background in the arts continues to shape her approach to cooking. She brings a creative mindset to recipe development, blending structure and experimentation to create dishes that are approachable, flavorful, and fun to make.  Today, Jennie’s philosophy aligns perfectly with Budget Bytes’ mission: that everyone deserves access to easy, delicious, and affordable meals. She is passionate about showing home cooks that cooking does not have to be complicated or intimidating, and she thrives on turning simple, everyday ingredients into satisfying dishes that fit any budget.

Outside of the kitchen, Jennie lives in East Nashville with her partner, Travis, a filmmaker, and their beloved dog, Jack. Together they enjoy daily trips to the dog park, hiking, and cozy dinner and movie nights. Jennie is an avid pasta lover, indie rock enthusiast, and scary movie fan who loves enjoying time with friends and family, usually over good food and plenty of laughter. She feels deeply grateful for the simple, creative, and love-filled life they have built together.
